United beat Swallows 2 - 0 in Dobsonville

The Mbombela United FC is a community soccer club based in the Mpumalanga Provincial's capital city of Mbombela and is populary known as Tingwenyama, ("The Lions" in the local siSwati Language).


The club started playing competitive soccer in the SAB league before acquiring a South African Division 2 status just before the 2010/11 soccer season and is wholly owned by the Matsebula brothers, S’khumbuzo and Oupa who are well recognized successful businessmen in the commercial property and commuter transport business.


In its second season in the second division (the then Vodacom League) Mbombela United finished the league on the third position. In its third campaign, Tingwenyama, as the club is populary known, was crowned provincial winners with an unbeated run of 26 wins and 4 draws under the guidance of the then caretaker coach, Lesego Matsomela. However, things did not went all that well at the national playoffs which were held in Daveyton and the team had to go back to the drawing board.

The following season, Tingwenyama was faced with a tough challenge of defending the provincial championship and earn another spot in the national playoffs again. The club earned a crucial spot in the lucrative Nedbank Cup Tournament for the second time in a row and was paired against Soweto Giants, Morokka Swallows. In an evening encounter at Dobsonville Stadium, Mbombela United under the mentorship of former Swaziland International and Bidvest Wits forward Mpumelelo Gamedze narrowly lost 4 – 3 and earned a lot of respect from the national soccer fraternity because of the elegance fighting spirit as displayed in that match.

That same season (2013/14) and after Gamedze’s departure to Swaziland’s Manzini Wanderous, former Mbombela United Captain Mfanimphela “Mphela” Maseko took over as the Head Coach. In the following season, Coach ‘Mphela” pitched the Tingwenyama’s flag high again by winning the now ABC Motsepe league and securing the club’s ticket to the National playoffs where the team stands a chance to qualify for the National First Division.

Gaining Promotion to National First Division

Mbombela United emerged as the Group winners during the 2014/15 season National pLAYOFFS held in Kimberly and was promoted to the National First Division. In the playoffs finals, United played against Mthatha Bucks and won 2 - 1 curtesy of Isaac Nana and Inky Masuku's goals to be crowned the winners of the newly unveiled ABC Motsepe League Champions trophy and 1 million price money
